Workshop/Assembly Summary:

My name is Gill and I am a Polymer Clay artist, If you're not sure what this is, let me explain... The clay I use is called Fimo and it is a brightly coloured modelling material, and once it is shaped, it is then put into an ordinary home over to permanently harden it. The clay comes in a wide range of colours including metallic, glitter and glow-in-the-dark.

Who do I work with:
I can work with children from the age of 3 to 13 and am able to cater for all abilities as well as those with additional needs.

My experience:
I have been providing workshops in schools for 30 years, ranging from a half day taster session with one class, to a full school workshop over 7 days. These workshops are always tailored to meet your exact needs, whether you want something that links to your Mini Beasts Topic, Spanish Week, or The Romans, anything is considered!! I have worked at over 130 educational establishments and some for several times. I can also provide you with after-school and holiday clubs, if local to Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley.

The children will learn the following skills:
Condition and soften the clay by rolling and folding it.
Roll the clay into a ball, tube and other shapes.
Flatten the clay with their fingers and hands.
They will learn about which piece of clay is bigger or smaller.
They will learn the difference between 2D and 3D.
They will learn how to cut into halves, quarters, sixths, eighths etc.
Add textures to their clay with the materials I will bring.
Add a variety of patterns, such as spots or stripes to the clay.
How to use the tools and equipment in a safe way.
How to make sure that their hands are clean at the end of the workshop and in between certain colours.
They will learn about Polymer Clay, its properties and what makes it special and I will bring some of my art to show them what a Polymer Clay artist makes.
They will learn some new vocabulary such as conditioning, shaping, rolling, folding, polymer, plastic, flattening, sphere, 3D, 2D, textures, patterns, baking, hard, soft, squishy, pliable.

Testimonials:

Wisewood Primary School - Sheffield
What was the most successful aspect of the artist's input?
”There were many successful aspects; Enthusiasm, knowledge, organisation, communication, relationship with the class—every child got an equal share of the experience and their artistic input was valued.”

”Gill was able to make each child feel their ideas and designs were of importance, in particular how the collaboration of ideas can make something truly wonderful! It was great to see the children glowing with pride when they returned with their finished piece. I’d so love to have Gill in again (and I’m working on it!). Even if a whole school project doesn’t materialise, because Gill is so versatile I’m sure I will find an opportunity in my next year group to invite her in!”
Maggie Beard. Y3 teacher

St Gabriel's Catholic Primary School - Leigh
”Thanks Gill! The work you produced with very small children was just fantastic! You built up special relationships with all the children you worked with, and each child was fascinated and enthralled with the end results. FANTASTIC! SUPER! INSPIRING! Thank you for all your hard work too - nothing was too much trouble, and your enthusiasm was infectious”
Angela Murray (Reception Teacher)
